Papa would walk alot in his neighborhood, to and from work and just to walk - always greeting and spekaing to shopkeepers and his neighbors. (I understand he now takes his afternoon walks in the Vatican gardens - I hope he keeps it up as this is key to good health!) Often he asked their opnions on such items as batteries, light bulbs, and the best apples for making strudel (I wonder who was making the strudel - Papa or his real sister Maria or Sister Ingrid?)

One of his favorite brand of notebooks to write in that he would buy at a local store in Rome had a dachsund (weiner dog) cartoon on it.

I'm absolutely perplexed.... where's the doodles?
Are those dogs a pattern on the napkin, or did Ratzinger doodle those little dogs? |

He had to have traced those little guys from something underneath the napkin.
Or else he's an absolute artistic genius because those little dogs are identical. And... well... if it's true.... ...one of the cutest things I've ever seen. |

He likes wearing cufflinks..............
And it's not a recent thing since he's become Pope. He also wore them when he was appointed a Bishop in 1977 on the picture where he's standing on the platform with that lovely smile on his face and waving to the crowd, I spotted his smart cufflinks. Really nice........ |

I loved hearing him speak Spanish at the angelus - it flowed out so beautifully (as all Papa's languages seem to!).

The eBay offer is just a joke | #33 | ||
|
As even my old eyes can see, the doggies on the piece of toilet paper are standard print and have not been drawn manually.
Who understands German will have recognized that this offer is just a joke. In English, the offer "Ein Blatt Klopapier - zum Glck vllig unbenutzt. Und das Besondere: Es wurde garantiert noch nie von Ratzinger benutzt!" reads: "A piece of toilet paper - fortunately unused. And the special feature: It can be guaranteed that it was never used by Ratzinger!" Already for months, many people have attempted to profit from the fact that Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger was elected pope. His birth house at Marktl am Inn is currently for sale (www.signonsandiego.com/ne...use.html). I guess, the current owner will ask for an astronomic price. |

I've just read all your posts of interesting facts about our beloved Benedict!!!! I can hardly believe that I've found a forum where I can EXPLODE about Joseph and tell all of you just how much I, too, love him!!!! There's no one I can talk to - so please keep on writing these super postings about him. Yes - I listen to his Angelus Blessing on the Vatican Radio website - and I've noticed how he pronounces English. It's so . -well - cute. I can't really think of a good word. After all these years he still can't say "th", so he says "faze" for "faith" and I think it's so beautiful!!!! I'm actually glad that he has this accent. Also, I noticed "choy" for "joy". I am a supposedly sensible English woman - Catholic, by the way - but all sense goes out of the window when I'm thinking about him or writing about him. As I said, I can't really talk about him to anyone. At my church they already think I'm "over the top" where Benedict is concerned.
Yes - according to the "Universe" he likes Spaghetti alla Carbonara, followed by Tiramisu [which is a scrumptious and very sweet pudding, with chocolate and cream] I think he is not allowed to drink alcohol, for health reasons? There's a photo of him in "Milestones" enjoying a picnic with friends and there's a bottle of Fanta on the table - anyone else notice this? I think he used to drink wine, when he held those summer schools in the Italian Alps [Val Pusteria?] for his old students - but that was before his health scare. He's better now - please God - for I couldn't bear to lose him. Cats? yes - I'm mad about cats too. My cat is also a fan of Benedict - well, she has to be!!!!!! Thanks again for this forum! God bless! Mary |

Yes- I suppose he is restricted to the Vatican gardens now. This means, when I go to Rome [I plan to go soon!] I shall not be bumping into him in the stationer's shop where he bought his notebooks
By the way - apparently his hand was injured when he was forced to do that basic training - so could the scar be from that? Mary |

Apparently many times in years past, Papa B and his Brother Georg would meet at the lovely little house in Regensburg when on breaks and holidays, and spend time together in the garden or outside, then retire indoors in the evening to make themselves a simple supper. (I guess the housekeeper has to have a vacation now and then too - so they were on their own) I wonder what Papa and Georg would cook?

Marybenedict,
Yes, I love the way he pronounces some of his words like 'faze for faith and Choy for joy; it is incredibly endearing and cute. He did enjoy an occasional beer, but not sure if he can still drink it. Apparently wine gives him a headache. Yes, I have noticed the bottle of Fanta on the table in the picture in 'Milestones'. He did indeed hates sports and like yourself I find this appealing about him too. He thought it was torture to have to do this every day when he felt neither mentally or physically cut out for them. He much preferred solitary pursuits but had to get along as best he could when he was in that big group environment. I really feel for him when he describes his difficulties in this way. I hope the Vatican gardens are nice and big because he needs to walk as he was used to it when he lived in his apartment and used to walk around the streets. I wonder if he misses being able to do this? I just hope he finds the gardens are enough walking exercise for him, but it's sad that none of us will ever be able to bump into him around St Peter's Square as would have been the case just a short time ago. Regards, Louise |

What strikes me is the way he pushes personal interests aside, the way he totally gives himself to the church.
He had finally found his destination and was happily teaching in Regensburg, living with his sister, brother nearby, when out of nowhere, he was called to be the bishop of Munich. He could have easily declined. Then, when he was dreaming about retirement from his tough job in Rome. Dreming about Bavarian tranquility and books...No, he stayed on. Dutiful and loyal. (hey, german shepherd comes to mind) He seems to have come to terms with being pope. He looks happy and vibrant. He is so spriritual. He must be soaking up energy from that obvious connection to God. Such devotion. Truly amazing. |
