Does anyone know if the Holy Father now wears his brother's Chrismtas gift of a watch? Was it bought from Lotus/Carrefoure and German (Times/Longines)??
Cheers to all

I have started this new thread because I thought the other on "GG and the others" was getting too cluttered. It fact it is tracking so many personalities. Often due to pressure of time, I am only keen on Big Georg. In case anyone has doubts about who I am referring to, here's a lovely pic of him :-

Oh lovely, thanks Singaporeconvert! I like "Big Georg" from his pics ---all I have to judge by. But he has a very "positive aura" and seems to have wonderful sense of humour, something one probably needs when working with boys in a choir for so many years... Wish Big Georg could be near Papa all the time.

The last we heard about Big Georg was his presence when the Regensburger Domspatzen performed for the Pope last autumn:-
This picture-perfect photo is from Yahoo.Does anyone know if the choir performs at every Sunday mass at Regensburg???An answer will be helpful for my travelling plans to R. Secondly, I note that the boys are not very 'young'. If the 'depopulation' of Germany continues, we may not see the choir in 15 years' time. Recently, I met a business associate from Ukraines. He said that he was keeping his children in the Ukraines rather than sending them to 'old' Europe because the demographic landscape there scared the lights out of his heart. |

Georg Ratzinger must be a very proud man to be the brother of a Pope who is loved and admired by so many. I hope they keep in regular contact with each other.

Thanks "Singapore Convert" for the pic of Fr. Georg at the harpsichord!
It will certainly be added to my collection. "I have a mustard- seed; and I am not afraid to use it."

Light a Candle | #5 | ||
|
Some time ago, Mary Benedict wrote on this forum that she had lighted a candle for Big Georg after Mass. I think it was at the time of his heart problems.
I thought back then that this was a splendid and very caring idea. Big Georg is a wonderful man in his own right, and it is sad to contemplate such a frail man suffering the pain and fear of serious heart problems. Added to this, he is a great comfort and support to his little brother. I think that without Big G Papa B's life would be that much more lonely. Even when they are not together, they can speak on the phone and are comforted by knowing that each is praying for the other. I'm sure that Papa B has prepared himself for life without Big Georg, he is intelligent and mature enough to have done this, but as his fans, it would be a work of mercy to light a candle for Big G when we can. I have taken to doing this, adding a little prayer that he continues to give joy to his brother. Remember how distressed Papa was when his sister died? Admittedly she was younger, but his sensitive heart would be desolate if his brother should die before him, which is likely, but we can at least pray for a few more years. An interview with Msgr Ratzinger showed that he is a clear and incisive thinker in his own right and quite capable of being equal in a discussion with his theologian brother. Their conversations must be very rich and fruitful. We pray for Pope Benedict and his intentions at every Mass, so it isn't neglecting him in any way to have special prayers for his brother. |

Clare,
Nice thoughts you've expressed here; and yes, B16 would be lonelier of course if anything happened to his brother. For one thing, Georg is his link with the past and it must be hard when there is no one left around who remembers things from the 'old days'! Pray for Benedict and pray for his brother too. |

Galantarie, I'm so glad you brought up this topic. I'm always worried that Papa will really suffer if it should so happen that his brother goes first. There's no church where I can light a candle for Big G., but I pray for his health quite often ( from now on every day!). So, let's just do it. (Can one light a candle in one's own home? I'm sure, the Jews do that and they are the brothers/sisters of our foundational religion - so... home candle for Big G. where I live!

Magnideum, this is a lovely idea. I think that the value of the candle is partly in the fact that it consitutes a little sacrifice of money and effort, you have to put some pennies in the box and then take the candle, called a votive candle or light. These vary from tapers to simple nightlights. We have the nightlights in most of our churches in England as they are safer. You can get coloured glass holders if you want a nice effect in the home, red for the holy spirit, blue for Mary (also for prayer) or transparent. The candle itself represents the prayers you are sending up. Commercial nightlights will do unless you prefer something else.
I bought some gorgeous votive candles in France recently, they were really for burning in the church, but I wanted to take some home. |

Thank you, SingaporeConvert, for your idea of the Big Georg Ratzinger thread. The notion of His Holiness having a brother like he is, along with the abundance of other gifts and virtues, makes him - the Pope - even more admirable. What a blessed family they are.
With their fraternal love the two men who dedicated their lives to the Church are an example of love for all of us, they really are together "the salt of the earth". In a recently posted series of pictures it is revealed once again as a gentle protective guidance of the elder by the younger with a tender hand gesture (see: "A question about Ingrid Stampa" on the "Papal apartment and family" thread). |

Wonderful idea , thank you ! I love to see the two of them together . Their devotion for each other is admirable. I just love to read stories about them and their childhood . I am sure their Mom tought them some prayers and they still pray them. George is always in my prayers too, he is very precious. |

Yes, Georg means a lot to B16 and although Benedict has all these duties to perform every day and having to meet all kinds of people and the papal household serving him and doing all the chores; it is still a fact that once his working day has come to an end; he will retire to his apartment and be alone (apart from God of course) and that is when he may miss his brother the most.
I am sure they must pray very fervently for each other. Regards, Louise |

I remember it was reported after Joseph had been made Pope that Georg's housekeeper Agnes said that Georg had slumped in the chair and did not move for the rest of the evening. She was said to have told reporters that she had never seen him like that before.
One can only imagine how he must have felt and the conflicting emotions he must have experienced at the news. Now, of course, he accepts it was the working of the holy spirit and that Joseph was destined to become Pope. He can only be in awe at the sheer enormity of the divine office which is now held by his 'little brother'. The sadness on his part is because he so wanted Joseph to retire and be with him. Louise |

Quote: Louise, oh, I didn't know this - how touching. You can only guess how Georg must have felt on that day. I remember he was on German TV on 8th April (Frank Elstner Show) and of course they asked him about his brother who had good chances to become the next Pope. Georg got nearly upset and answered that this would never happen. He probably felt so lonely when he then realised that there would never ever be a quiet retirement for the both of them. |

Simone in the German section captured these pictures from a video of Monsignor Georg arriving at Castelgandolfo on July 29, 2005, and posted them in the Italian forum, which Beatrice of the French section then turned into this collage:
![]() I found it particularly touching that the Pope came down to the courtyard to greet his brother when he arrived at Castelgandolfo, and the pictures show him holding out a hand to guide his brother as they enter the building. |

Lapiranja,
Thanks for relating what Georg said in the interview on 8th April. He must have been really stunned when Joseph was actually made Pope........... It must have given Joseph a nasty scare when Georg was taken ill and had to be taken to hospital when he was at Castelgandolfo too. Regards, Louise |

Thank you, SingaporeConvert - I don't think we have seen the very sweet photo of the three Ratzinger children before. Maria smiles so widely while the two boys seem serious. From the German it seem the Pope value this photograph very much.
