Pope Benedict wants to return to the Sistine Chapel choirs singing Gregorian chant and the church music of such composers as Claudio Monteverdi from the 17th century. He also wants to revive the Latin Mass.UPI / The Washington Times

Wonderful! Our Papa retains his love of the Church's "mother-tongue" of Latin, and wishes it use more extensively in the "Novus ordo" than we are used-to as of late. He has also stated that one cannot throw-out the former earlier litugy, prior to the "Novus ordo", which served our ancestors so well, and was obviously Church-aproved and good for them as well! That would be inconsistant and redundant...Only harmful to the Church in varity and its continuous line of growth. Being alive, one cannot just "cut-off" it's earlier traditions and litugy, and still survive today!
In the recent past, Papa has celebrated the Old rite, and I posted this on another board earlier: "Celebration of the Tridintine Mass" In 1991, Benedict XVI celebrated the Tridentine Latin Mass in Weimar, Germany, in a crowded church, which included many priests and seminarians. In 2001, while at the Fontgombault conference, Cardinal Ratzinger sang the Tridentine Latin Mass. More recently, Cardinal Ratzinger, in his homily given during the Tridentine Mass he celebrated just a few months ago (and once again at the Abbey at Fontgombault pictured below), he stated: "Let us pray to the Lord to help us to help the Church to celebrate the Liturgy well, to be truly at the feet of the Lord, to receive the gift of true life, the essential and necessary reality, for the salvation of all, the salvation of the world. Amen." REVIVAL of the Liturgy: the best of Both Orders Anthony E. Clark, Ph.D. writes: "The Holy Father is in favor of restoring the traditional aesthetic of sacred architecture, i.e., building Catholic churches in the tradition of those of the past, with many images of saints and angels, and of reemphasizing the tabernacle. In 'The Spirit of the Liturgy', he wrote, 'A church without the Eucharistic Presence is somehow dead. . . . If the presence of the Lord is to touch us in a concrete way, the tabernacle must also find its proper place in the architecture of our church buildings.' " Also, "the venerable and ancient practice of having a crucifix on the altar is a 'tradition of praying to Lord who is to come under the sign of the cross.' " Finally, he is in favor of maintaining the use of the Tridentine Mass, rather thanas he stated at the Fontgomault conferencehaving it 'frozen, as if in a deep-freeze, just for a certain type of people.'" " In his preface to Franz Brieds Die heilige Liturgie, Benedict XVI wrote that, 'The Church stands and falls with the Liturgy.' The way Holy Mass is celebrated is clearly of paramount importance to our Holy Father." " Benedict XVI is also in favor of the celebration of Pope Paul VIs Mass in Latina position in keeping with the actual directives of the Second Vatican Council. Sacrosanctum Concilium states, 'The use of Latin, with due respect to particular law, is to be preserved in the Latin rites.' The use of vernacular was suggested only for 'readings, directives and in some prayers and chants.'" Look at the marvelous Masses we've witnessed from Benedict XVI these past months since the end of March. It is clear Pope Benedict XVI is quite pleased with Marini's brand of real liturgical traditionalism ...and that is all that matters now..... AGAIN I emphasize, watch how the Mass is performed over EWTN in Irondale, Alabama. Our French boards have 9 picture depicting Cardinal Ratzinger performing the Tridintine Mass, during Easter Sunday 15 April 1990. Here are just three: ![]() ![]()

Friday, July 08, 2005 Latin & Gregorian Chant to Make Comeback Exciting news: details from the working version of "The Eucharist: source and summit of the life and mission of the church." From Yahoo! News: [The paper] suggests, for example, that Latin be used during international liturgical gatherings so all priests involved can understand the proceedings, and it suggests that parishes consider using more Gregorian chants to prevent more "profane" types of music from being played. It calls for priests not to be "showmen" who draw attention to themselves and says lay people can have an important but "minimal" presence in Masses. It says the tabernacle which holds the bread and wine held by Catholics to be the body and blood of Christ should have a prominent place in the church and not be shunted off to a corner. Excellent! Looks like everyone jumped the gun; and had the wrong perception when "Latin" Mass was pronounced for a comeback at St. Peter's....What everyone was thinking [erroneously]: "Tridentine", when we should also been thinking Latin "Novus Ordo". The Masses at St. Peter's since August have truly been Latin Masses in their fullest meaning, and they are "Novus Ordo"....And Papa has certainly shown us how beautiful the "Novus ordo" of Pope Paul VI can be when properly celebrated and in the originally intended Latin tongue, with choral Litugical Music respectfully interploited throughout (from the immense treasury of the Western Church throughout the past 1000+ years...)! Praise be to Our Papa for making sure this was accomplished; and also to Piero Marini who has made Papa's first liturgical dream come true for St. Peter's! Bless them both, on this great "journey" of bringing about the reform of the Reformed! It is clear Pope Benedict XVI is quite pleased with Marini's brand of real liturgical traditionalism.
Don't be surprised if eventually your neighborhood Parish Church catches onto this wonderful "fever" in the Roman-Catholic Church as well...I hope.... ![]() "I have a mustard- seed; and I am not afraid to use it."

Here's a good piece by Sandro Magister from the Catholic Educator's Resource Center called Gregorian Chant Is Returning from Exile. Maybe.
"Valentino Miserachs Grau, president of the Pontifical Institute of Sacred Music, is calling for its revival. Pope Benedict XVI wants it, too. But the path is full of obstacles" Link: catholiceducation.org/articles/arts/al0256.html ~Imladris~

Thank you for that Magister article, "Imladris"!
Papa has his work cut out for him. The Church must cultivate good Sacred classical musicians, and Kapellmeisters once again. And parishoner's ears must be retuned to the glory of the Heavens. Politics must be left principally home; and the Church rerecognize the primacy of Christ and His sacrifice. Really educate the Seminarians; not just "push them on" "because we need Priests"....It is quality that really counts...not quantity, or amateurs "filling-in" because of the neglect of trained sacred Latin musical-liturgists! St. Peter's is giving us a great "template" to follow! and the "Compedium to the Cathechism" should be made standardly-mandatory reading/ and implementation thereof, for all.... @ letmel
That's great news! I am so glad for you. You know, I've never seen what is supposed to be a "Novus Ordo properly done" Mass, although I am told B16's inauguration Mass closely resembles this. Anyway, I hope the "winds of change" re this kind of liturgical reform blows in our direction as well. GEORGE's JUNGLE 24-HOUR INTERNET RADIO FROM CALGARY
