Member Posts: 745 08/10/05 13:58:40	Tags : None Hello from Mary! I thought I'd start a thread about the audiences, as they are now being televised on EWTN and more of us can see them. Did anyone see today's? 10th August? I've a few things I'd like to say about it. I'll do that tomorrow, as it's 11 pm here in England and I ought to try to get to sleep. A few pages of "Milestones" will make me dream of Papa - I do wish I could dream of him. Sogni d'oro a tutti voi! Love, Peace and Choy! From Mary x

Posts: 770 08/10/05 14:38:31	I watched it online on CtV - Papa was all smiles and walked the whole way down the aisle to greet all. He delivered his address in several languages, and the crowd was lively. He coughed a few times and sniffled once - sounds to me lie Papa may have some allergies )it was not a deep cough, but a sort of a coufh when your nose is running etc...) He seemed relaxed and maybe just a bit more subdued - I hope Big Georg is doing ok - no news about him since last week other than he was released and went bak to CG with Papa. I didnt see him with the hanky out - so it must not have been too hot! I was agravated thought that CTV cuts off the broadcast while Papa is still milling aroung greeting people -that part is just as good as the actual address! He is more natural and relaxed - and has that lovely radiant smile. It must be really something to be up close in the front - maybe one day...

I happened to wake up around 3:40, so i switched on the TV to see if it was on, and was disappointed to see some documentary about St Peters or something. So I ended the timer recording and went back to bed. Don't tell me it came on at 3:45....

Posts: 770 08/10/05 14:50:34	I havent had any luck with EWTN - they don't have it on cable here, so I check their programming out online. Not great picture but better than nothing. I assume the online broadcast is the same as the TV. I have found that the less-than-perfect CTV online connection is the only place I can be sure to see the angelus and general audience! This started at 4:30 a.m. EST and lasted about 1 hour - I just get up a bit earlier on Wednesday's!

They also broadcast just the English portion at 4:07PM [16:07 EDT], and most of that was the introduction...and the Chinese toddlers from a Day School! The psalm summery was nice [first considering arrogance, then humility], as well as his comment on 4th Century John Cassesian! EWTN promised to show the whole thing at 4:30 AM [EDT]; but I notice if they have their chaplet or Irondale thing going, they will not break it off or interrupt....PROBABLY OUT OF REVERENCE...BUT that will leave us without some of Papa!! Again, in the Morning [Thursday] at 07:45 [EDT] in North America, they should repeat the English portion. Remember you can always hear it, or downstream it to your "I-Pod" at 105 LIVE!

Member Posts: 745 08/10/05 23:51:28	Buon giorno! Guten Tag! and Good morning!!!!!!!!!! I'm really pleased that the audience yesterday came over on some of your televisions in the USA. I think I would need to get Vatican Television - which would involve a second satellite dish, I'm told! - in order to get all the Papa programmes. But we are lucky in the UK now - we get the audiences on EWTN. Yesterday the coverage went on much longer thant the previous week. Seeing all those young people was so delightful! Most are on their way to Cologne. The small children - were they from Hong Kong or Korea?- were lovely, in their national costume and they sang for Papa!!!!!!!!!! The only grouse I have there is that they didn't show Papa's face while the children were singing - I'm sure he must have been smiling and waving. There were banners with "Il Santo Padre Benedetto" and much cheering, especially from the Spanish pilgrims. I noticed a Bavarian flag and was so pleased about that - it must be heartening for Papa to see that. I think they were from Munich-Freising archdiocese. Our coverage continued after the cardinals and archbishops had greeted Papa. Then.....this was what interested me. Papa's chair was moved forward and lots of children and adults in wheelchairs were brought to him for his blessing. This was a very moving experience. But here's what I really noticed: At that point, Lil Georg came forward with a glass of water and gave it to Papa. He drank some of it and handed it back. Oh I was so pleased that Georg did that!!!! I said "Thank you" to him - out loud!!!!!! I, too, had noticed the little coughs from Papa - and was concerned , of course. I wonder if it's the air-conditioning in that hall????????? I suppose they are holding the audiences there, because at least it's cooler than out in the square, but a/c does have its problems. We actually have it in some shops in my rural part of England now! Amazing! But, in Boots I went upstairs and it got my throat and nose - I started sneezing like mad!!!!! Glad Papa didn't sneeze. He must have been exhausted after yesterday's audience. I hope he was whisked back to C G in the helicopter, had a nice light lunch and then rested, really rested [curtains drawn] for the whole afternoon. -------------------------------------------------------- If anyone has any pics of the audience, can you please post them here as well as on the pic thread? Member Posts: 1479 08/11/05 00:09:08	Hi Mary! How I envy you, you've already seen the August 10 audience! I have to wait for the delayed telecast over EWTN on Sunday morning ... I wish I could see them live, but the good thing about my seeing the audience on Sundays, though, is that I watch them right after coming home from Sunday Mass! A truly great way to start the day! I always wish the cameras would focus on Il Papa as the "delegations" are called out, because they all cheer so loudly and so passionately! He would definitely be smiling that shy smile of his ... and probably wave that delightful little wave of his where he wiggles three or four fingers! My one big regret about the taped EWTN telecasts is that they don't show Il Papa walking toward his chair and greeting people. I always love to watch him with the children, as he is always the soul of tenderness with them. Lil Georg is a delight. I've always found his face to be very open and kind. There is a lovely photo of him and Il Papa taken at the Gemelli (I think it's on the thread for Big Georg's hospitalization, right?), and he's smiling at a child with his chin propped on Il Papa's shoulder as Il Papa reaches out to the little one ... they look very much a "father-and-son" tandem in that photo, and they're both clearly delighted with the child. Like you, I think it's very touching that he is very attendant to Il Papa's needs. There you see the loyalty and devotion in him for Il Papa, yes? "Each of us is the result of a thought of God. Holding his weekly general audience Aug. 10 at the Vatican, the pope offered reflections on Psalm 131's opening verses, which reject pride in one's self-sufficiency. Instead, the psalm presents a proper attitude toward God as being "like a weaned child," still and quiet on the mother's lap. The image of the mother and child, the pope said, is a "sign of the tender and maternal love of God." The child in the psalm "is tied to his mother with a very personal and intimate relationship, not merely one of physical contact or because of the need for food," the pope said. "It is a more conscious bond, even though it is immediate and spontaneous. "This is the ideal parable of true spiritual childhood, of abandoning oneself to God, not in a blind or automatic way, but serenely and with responsibility," he said. The psalmist contrasts his dependence with the pride and conceit of those who busy themselves with the "great things" of this world, the pope said. Humble trust in God, Pope Benedict said, leads to "security, life and peace, and it extends from the present to the future, now and forever." The Vatican estimated about 6,000 people attended the audience. Many were youths, sporting World Youth Day shirts or hats, who stopped at the Vatican on their way to Cologne, Germany, for the celebration of World Youth Day Aug. 16-21. Among the groups present, the Vatican announced "young people from mainland China, Hong Kong and Taiwan headed for Cologne for World Youth Day." That group, traveling with members of the Neocatechumenal Way, sang a familiar Neocatechumenal version of "Alleluia" for the pope. It was shown live here at 9.30 am our time. Galantarie:Thank you for the photo - I can't get my right mouse click to give me the commands you said, so still can't see how to post a photo. Thank you also for the summary of Papa's message. I couldn't follow the Italian at all well, though he does speak that language clearly and not too quickly. The man doing the commentary at the beginning just got faster and faster.....I couldn't understand what he said at all. I noticed yesterday again how very enthusiastic the Spanish-speaking pilgrims are ! They cheered like mad and Papa acknowledged them with a wave and a smile. I read in a news item yesterday [Yahoo I think it was] that Papa doesn't have a rapport with youth like John Paul did - they mentioned his very first audience, when a group of young people had a banner with BENEDETTO on it and they were chanting "Benedetto!" as they do so often now. This news item said that Papa didn't go over to them at the end of the audience, as John Paul would have done. I think this was an unfair comment, as it was Papa's first audience. He was obviously nervous and I bet his shyness was still bad - I think he is less shy now and seems quite self-assured at the audiences. Very much in control. God bless Lil Georg for looking after Papa so well. Thank you as well to Galanterie for the photo and posting for us Papa's message ! I want to go there soo badly. Ha, ha... those noisy Spanish-speaking pilgrims... they got Papa waving at them . Papa speaks a good Spanish, I have heard him online. I think he is good in anything he does.

I think Papa has a great rapport with the young - and everyone for that matter! He has a radiant smile and a genuine look on his face - an open countenance. People read him as a sincere and humble person - a bit of shyness is always captivating because it tends to put people at ease. Many said when he was elected that he would be too intellectual for all the people in his care. But I think people have begun to view him as a great teacher - and as a teacher I know that your "students" will rise to the level of your expectations - Papa gives such clear and thoughtful homilies and people have really begun to read his works. His lifetime of thinking and teaching and writing seems to be of great use right now.

How Marybenedict described the show, she got to see more of the audience than galantarie, and Sara Virginia can see it online in CTV but letmel who missed only a half hour of it said that it was not showing online at 5:00 even though it was supposed to start at 4:30 and last one hour. Agh-- I'm so confused! I also can't get EWTN on my cable TV. I tried getting satellite dish installation but was not able to because my rented apartment faces the opposite (wrong) side of the sky. I've tried EWTN online twice over the past 3 weeks, getting up early to catch the streaming video but like galantarie said, they haven't shown it! I haven't tried CTV yet because I keep forgetting to get up on time to see if I can watch the audience through them (I oversleep! ) It sounds to me like there are different broadcasts for different countries/regions? Does that sound correct to anybody or am I wrong? I don't know. I must remember to set my alarm to see if CTV is showing it online at 4:30... $:\$ ~Imladris~

Member Posts: 334 08/11/05 16:26:29	I can't get EWTN either but I always watch Papa's Wednesday audiences or Sunday Angelus on-line through CTV. The video usually starts a few moments early and it seems that Papa is always right on time. Vatican TV schedules say that the Angelus lasts 20 minutes and the General Audiences 1 hour. The only times it deviated a bit from those times was for Papa's 2 Angeluses in Les Combes. Since Vatican TV, namely CTV is the only provider for these events, the coverage ought to be the same . Since we all know that Papa wants his message to be the focus, not himself, I'll wager that is why the cameras tend to focus on him basically just when he is speaking. We may wish it was otherwise but afterall it isn't just another bi-weekly TV programme!

Member Posts: 4652 08/11/05 16:52:25 Member	In their plans, and in their program guide, EWTN was to broadcast the WHOLE "GENERAL AUDIENCE" Live at 04:30 [EDT] AM on Wednesday morning, and repeat just the English portion in the afternoon for North America at 15:45 [EDT]and Thursday morning 07:45 [EDT]. North Americans are not given the Angelus through EWTN because EWTN has their own Irondale Angelus ! Europeans will receive the CTV Vatican Angelus (12 Noon Rome Time) on Sundays. So programing does differ. Parts of Germany and France which receive EWTN also will have slightly different programing to fit specials of local interest and colloqial language broadcasts. That is why , if you go to the EWTN string, it will direct you to your local listings for your particular country. There are some differences. Most of the time, streaming EWTN will be the same as LIVE TV; but certain programs are not streamed, and they will announce that ahead of time (as only being availavble on TV). Radio is another whole different ballpark. Many of their radio shows are strictly N.A. Radio. Others are streamed from Vatican Radio 105 LIVE! One week I was able to get the Vatican Angelus through Sirius, but, the next week they had Fr. Groechel on at the time! It is not consistant. I suppose they make the decision for what is prioity. Coming back from "LesCombes", and the "LesCombes" broadcasts I suppose were one-time events "worthy" of broadcast via Sirius Radio; other "routine" broadcasts they seemed-to rather put their own local broadcasts. I cannot read minds; I can only suppose and "try" to figure out their thinking/logic....I do not know if any of what I said here helps any; or makes any sense to anyone else!!! You can call the station. I posted the local numbers for around the world on the EWTN string.

Here in the Philippines, the EWTN delayed telecast that I watch begins with Il Papa's opening blessing. He then proceeds to the main message of the audience, and then the individual greetings in French, English, German, Spanish / Portuguese, Polish / Hungarian / Lithuanian, and Italian. It is always a joy to listen to all these languages. Although I speak only English, I love to listen to Il Papa's words in the other languages. Each language has a kind of "musical signature" in itself, much like the music of the masters: Beethoven is epic and passionate, Mozart is joyful and ebullient, Rachmaninoff and Tschaikovsky are dramatic and tragic. I'm trying to learn Italian, in the hope that I can understand him in the original Italian. Dear Marybenedict, I remember a very kind comment you made on another thread about my signature. I do so love this particular quote of Il Papa's. I think it encompasses the most important truth at the heart of our faith -- that we are, each one of us, regardless of creed or color, sinners or saints, children of God, conceived in the mind of God, created in the heart of God, and loved by God through all of eternity. Anyone who has ever had any doubts about his / her purpose in life, or whether there is any hope left for goodness and peace and love in this troubled world only has to remember these words, and everything will be alright. Is it not marvelous that Il Papa could express such a profound truth, and such boundless hope, in only 21 very simple words? God's blessings to all of you!
