Iran's President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad sent a Christmas message to Pope Benedict XVI, saying that he hoped the Christian feast would "bring peace and tranquility, founded upon justice and spirituality, to the international community."

The leader of Iran's Islamic republic, who recently completely his own pilgrimage to Mecca, expressed his own desire for

"peace, friendship, and respect for human rights."

He told the Pontiff that he hoped the new year 2008 would bring

"the elimination of oppression, of violence, and of discrimination."

Iran's government leadership has sought to cultivate ties with the Vatican in recent months-- reportedly hoping that the Holy See will take diplomatic action to avert a confrontation between Iran and the United States.
