Were he to have been prominant earlier, I suspect Pius's advisers may well have regarded Joseph Ratzinger with suspicion as they did De Lubac. Perhaps there will be a time when Newman and De Lubac will be honoured as doctors of the church.

Pius XII v De Lubac |

|
There has been much publicity recently about moves towards the canonisation of Pope Pius XII. Whilst it is obvious that Pope Pius XII is often slandered by his
detractors, I just wonder whether the publicity of furthering his cause for canonisation might be an unnecessary distraction; there is no need to canonise him.
A better candidate for Pope Benedict to support is Henri de Lubac who was a co founder of the journal Communio with the then Cardinal Ratzinger and Von
Balthasar. De Lubac was most influential in the development of Pope Benedict's theology; and, it could be argued, along with Newman, is one of the
inspirations behind this papacy's modern orthodoxy. Resourcement- going back to scripture and the fathers- is a noted feature of Pope Benedict's
thought and methods. De Lubac was a man of great spirituality and he was applauded by Pope John Paul II.
Were he to have been prominant earlier, I suspect Pius's advisers may well have regarded Joseph Ratzinger with suspicion as they did De Lubac. Perhaps there will be a time when Newman and De Lubac will be honoured as doctors of the church.
