During Advent I am going to try to read John Saward's Cradle of Redeeming Love which reflects on the theology of the Christmas Mystery. Saward, a convert from Anglo-Catholicism, draws on the Fathers and mystics of the church. It was this grounding in the patristic tradition which characterised traditional Anglicanism which was rediscovered by the Oxford Movement and Newman in particular. It is seen today in those Catholic theologians, including Pope Benedict, who can be characterised as being in the Ressourcement tradition. It is my thesis that the Via Media today is represented by theologians such as the Pope who defend orthodoxy from the extremes of liberalism on the one hand and fundamentalism on the other; or between relativism and obcurantism of various kinds.
Let's hope I can put in the time to finish the book this year.

Catholic theology is grounded in the Incarnation- ecclesiology, sacramental theology flow from this mystery.
