"ULYSSES" (from a story I saved from a newspaper dated: 09 APRIL, 1967) by John L. Hess
Ajaccio is probably the only place in the world where a pet pig is depicted in a stained-glass window in a Church.
In 1955, a country-cousin of the owners of "Serafina's Restaurant Cte d'Azur" on the Cours Napoleon, bought a newborn sanglier (wild pig) for the retaurant's patronne, Mrs. Serafina Benedetti. Sanglier is a prized item on its menu; but, the pig "Ulysses" wept, and Serafina surrendered. The animal became the house-pet. It was fed by customers and responded to caresses like a puppy, except that it had hardly any tail to wag.
One of the customers was an artist who was doing the windows for "L'Eglise St. Roch; and, he immortalized "Ulysses" (though it must be acknowledged that, in the window, Ulysses looks more like a green dog than a pig).
As for the pig, it all proved too mortal. One day it slipped-out, dug-up the garden of the Prefecture, and the Prefect said, it had to go.
The pig went back to the country-cousin, where... (at this point Serafina sighed and fell silent)....
