Problems at Mass--what to do? |

I need some advice. I go to a wonderful, traditional Parish in Salt Lake City. One of the laymen of the congregation has suddenly become an "MC"--he stands in the pulpit before mass, asks everyone to turn around and introduce themselves to those standing nearby and shake hands. I come to mass early to pray a rosary and do not want to engage in all of this. It is bad enough that we have to do all of that nonsense at the peace. I should also mention there is a coffee hour right after mass. Would that not be the place to make introductions? I am thinking of changing parishes because I feel that my place of quiet and prayer has been stolen. What would you do?

I tried to answer this by private mail, but the system returned it to me, unopened.
I recommend several things. First, remember that God wants us to offer up our suffering so that it might be joined to His from the Cross. Second: If you have children, BEGIN ATTENDING THE INDULT MASS if you have the chance. Somewhere in Salt Lake City there should be one. We still assist, with our four boys, at the early Novus Ordo Mass and I still sing for two later Masses, but I highly recommend you becoming familiar with the peace which the Missal of St. Pius V affords. It is my hour of peace and quiet with God when I am able. [When I do assist at this Mass, it is my fourth for the day, but it is easily the most prayerful]. I was reminded recently of how silly the situation has become in this country. I was described as "one of those Latin Mass" people when I asked incredulously about the licitness of a Mass a fried described to me. I asked several pointed questions, even as I refused to identify myself as a "Latin Mass" person. I asked about Extraordinary Ministers, girls serving at the altar, music and "brethren" --- as in "Pray, brethren, that our sacrifice...." These things don't mark me as some throw back. I merely wish Mass to be celebrated properly, that is, RIGHTLY, and with reverence. How important the change in language has become! "It is right to give Him thanks and praise" comes from wholecloth, since even if it not untrue, it does not accurately reflect the Latin original: DIGNUM ET JUSTUM EST. When was the last time your Sunday Mass experience was both DIGNUM and JUSTUM? |

Problematic Mass | #2 | ||
|
Hi! Thanks for your reply. I have a new e-mail, which is francis@techguy.net. Sorry about the confusion. I have no children; I am a consecrated Secular Franciscan. I am also disabled and cannot drive, so need to attend the masses I can get to. The ambience before mass is becoming more like a cocktail party. I went early last night to pray my office quietly before mass (silly me). Instead I was treated to two ladies discussing loudly their trip to Wendover, Nevada, and how much they got from the slot machines. I, too, reject the label of a "Latin Mass Catholic." I am really frustrated by what goes on in our parish--girls on the altar, standing to welcome "all the ministers of this mass and our presider, Father......." I have tried speaking to the priest, but he dismisses me, saying it is important to shake hand before mass in order to be friendly. I am offering it up, the frustration, the sadness, everything!

You miss the point. The Tridentine mass was often appallingly celebrated but the new mass in Latin with good music is most reverent. Tridentine should be avilable for those who want it but so should other rites. BXVI has allowed parishes in the US to use the Anglican rite which is, of course, reverent. The Sarum rite (the old English) has been used in Oxford. I have been to a Tridentine mass in London. It was dreadful.
We should aim for good, well prepared liturgy whatever the rite. |

You cannot serve two masters, you will love one and hate the other, were the words of our Lord. The clergy, Our Lady's clergy must hold on to tradition, to fully express the love of God to the people. You cannot say the mass to serve your own purpose. So many people hate Jesus, they try to destroy him in the mass: liturgical abuses. Satan is the mastermind. Read the Pope's encyclical, Deus Caritas est, he explained charity which can be most effectively be practiced by everyone in the Holy Mass. This great Love has been placed under attack....
