Der Norditaliener hatte fast sechzig Jahre lang seine schützende Hand über die Päpste gehalten, davon 35 Jahre lang als Leiter der so genannten "Vigilanza" und der vatikanischen "Gendarmerie". Beim Attentat auf Papst Johannes Paul II. vom 13. Mai 1981 war Cibin maßgeblich daran beteiligt, den türkischen Attentäter Mehmet Ali Agca zu überwältigen. Zwei Jahre später vereitelte er im portugiesischen Fatima eine Messerattacke auf den Papst. Im Alter von 80 Jahren ging er 2006 in Pension. The pontiff met Thursday with the Carabinieri's Vatican corps during its traditional annual audience, two weeks after a woman with psychiatric problems breached a security barrier in St. Peter's Basilica and pulled the pope to the floor. Benedict didn't mention the Christmas Eve incident. But he referred to the Christmas holidays, saying they "allowed so many people to appreciate the humble yet indispensable work" that security guards perform in protecting Vatican visitors. Benedict wasn't hurt in the knockdown and his personal bodyguard - who stands closest to the pope - tackled the woman. She is undergoing treatment at a clinic outside Rome VIS - At midday today Benedict XVI received Archbishop Vincenzo Pelvi, military ordinary for Italy, accompanied by Leonardo Gallitelli, general of the Italian "Arma dei Carabinieri", and members of the force from the "Roma San Pietro" company. The Pope expressed his thanks for the "diligent efforts you make with your vigilant yet discreet presence in the area around the Vatican. "Your labours help to provide security and serenity for the pilgrims and visitors who come to the centre of the Catholic faith", he added, "and allow them the necessary spiritual concentration as they visit the tomb of the Apostle Peter and the Basilica that houses it". "May your own faith, the tradition of faithfulness and generosity of which you are heirs, and the ideals of your corps help you to find in this delicate service new sources for satisfaction and for experiencing positive elements in your personal and professional lives". And the Pope concluded: "May Mary, the 'Virgo fidelis' and your patroness, accompany you and the entire 'Arma dei Carabinieri', especially those involved in delicate peace missions in various countries of the world, and accept your good intentions, presenting them to her Son". Januar 2010 ein: Pope receives members of the General Inspectorate for Public Security in the Vatican VIS - In a traditional meeting that takes place every year in January, Benedict XVI today received members of the General Inspectorate for Public Security in the Vatican. In his remarks the Pope thanked the agents for the work they do to maintain public order in St. Peter's Square and the area around the Vatican, highlighting how their task "is particularly important for the mission of the Roman Pontiff". "Your efforts", he went on, "favour a climate of serenity and tranquillity which gives those who come to the centre of Christianity the chance to enjoy an authentic religious experience, in contact with the fundamental monuments of the Christian faith such as the tomb of the Apostle Peter, the relics of many saints and the tombs of numerous Pontiffs, loved and venerated by Christian people". Recalling then the "commitment and great responsibility" required of the agents in the performance of their duties, the Pope told them that their work should be "a special way to serve the Lord, almost as if to 'prepare the way for Him', so that each pilgrim's and each visitor's experience at the centre of Christianity may represent a special occasion to encounter the Lord Who changes lives". The Holy Father concluded by expressing the hope that the work undertaken by the agents of the General Inspectorate for Public Security "may make you ever stronger and more coherent in your faith", and he encouraged them "not to be afraid or ashamed to express that faith in your own families, in the workplace and wherever you may find yourselves". Salvatore Festa, the prefect in charge of coordinating the work of several branches of Italian security who protect the pope, said despite careful security measures, "it's also clear that there are many other factors that come into play and many times these are random and unpredictable." He made his comments in an interview published Jan.7 in the Vatican newspaper, L'Osservatore Romano. "That night everything worked perfectly, according to the usual standards" of security, he said. The pilgrims and visitors who entered St. Peter's Basilica had all been thoroughly screened for weapons and potentially dangerous objects, "and I can guarantee that not even a straight pin got in there without proper authorization," Festa said. Domenico Giani, director of Vatican security services, "reacted in a split second" and immediately intervened to prevent the woman from harming the pope, Festa said. Susannah Maiolo, 25, jumped a security barrier at the start of the Dec. 24 liturgy as Pope Benedict processed into St. Peter's Basilica. As Vatican guards tackled her to the ground, she was able to grab the pope's vestments, causing him to lose his balance and tumble to the floor. The woman, who was not armed, has a history of mental illness. Vatican sources confirmed that Maiolo was the same person who attempted to rush the pope at midnight Mass in 2008, but was tackled, again by Giani, before she could reach the pontiff. As of Jan. 8, she was still undergoing evaluation at a psychiatric ward in a hospital 45 miles outside of Rome. Doctors' reports were to play a major role in determining what action, if any, the Vatican would take against Maiolo. The Vatican newspaper article said it would have been impossible for guards to have recognized Maiolo from among thousands of pilgrims who streamed through security. "Not even the most sophisticated video scanner can guarantee recognizing a subject," the article said. One visible change in security measures adopted after the Dec. 24 Mass involved the placement of the barricades lining the central nave of St. Peter's Basilica. The aisle cleared for the pope has been widened by almost five feet, which means a slightly smaller seating capacity for papal events, but more room for guards to maneuver. The pope, however, did not let the widened corridor prevent him from having personal contact with pilgrims. During liturgies beginning Dec. 31, the pope walked up to the waist-high barricades to greet and shake hands with the faithful and bless babies being lifted toward him. In annual audiences with security personnel to offer them holiday greetings, the pope praised their ability to balance safety and public access. In an audience Jan. 8 with the Italian military police assigned to the area around St. Peter's Square, the pope noted that their "vigil and discrete presence" at the Vatican helped maintain "security and serenity for pilgrims and visitors." Januar 2010 ein: The new security measures for the Pope Dieser Beitrag enthält noch weitere Bilder und Text. Bemerkenswert ist, dass man hier das erste Mal den stellvertretenden Chef des Sicherheitsdienstes, der sich "Alessandrino" nennt, auf einem offiziellen Photo des L'Osservatore Romano sieht. Er ist sehr gut am oberen Bildrand zu erkennen, wie er mit kahl geschorenem Kopf und mit vor dem Körper verschränkten Armen neben den Bischöfen, die im linken Teil ihre Plätze haben, steht und dem Auszug des Papstes nachsieht. "Alessandrino" ist bereits für mindestens eine körperliche Mißhandlung eines Pilgers aus Deutschland verantwortlich. Dennoch war er als Sicherheitschef eingesetzt, als im Juli 2009 die US-amerikanische First Lady Michele Obama den Petersdom besichtigte. Wahrscheinlich war er es auch, der für die allgemeine Sicherheit während der Christmesse 2009, vor der Susanna Maiolo den Papst angriff, zuständig war.
