Again, what is the big deal? So he smokes. So what?
It is a very big deal, New Perspective, because smoking is a very, very great health hazard. Tell me, have you ever lost a loved one to lung cancer or emphysema? I lost a very dear uncle to lung cancer, and he suffered terribly -- all of us mourned his death profoundly, and he left behind two daughters and a wife who loved him; my grandparents were devastated that they were not strong enough to travel to Sydney for his funeral. So I hope you can understand why I absolutely hate smoking, and why it is a big deal to me, and to those on this Forum who think likewise.
We live in very difficult times, and Benedict XVI is very much the shining beacon of love, hope and faith that the world desperately needs. I don't know about you, but I am not prepared -- and I suppose I never will be -- to see the man who is very much our beloved shepherd, and who I myself had the incomparable joy of seeing in person last year, afflicted by an illness related to a very bad habit, and which could undoubtedly cause him such great suffering. I saw John Paul the Beloved suffer and it broke my heart. I don't want to think about how I will feel if I should -- God forbid -- ever see the beatific and gentle Benedict suffer. It will be like watching my own father suffer all over again. Surely you can understand that, New Perspective?
Now, you think he smokes, we think he doesn't. All of us are entitled to our opinions. All that we ask is that those opinions be expressed in an atmosphere of mutual respect and courtesy.
Surely that is not difficult for you to understand?
