OAKLAND, CA (USA) - Rising on the shores of Lake Merritt, the Cathedral of Christ the Light in downtown Oakland is striking. Its glass exterior shimmers, its nave is ringed in Douglas fir, and a high-tech image of Jesus floats above its marble altar.  Jim Wilson/The New York Times

I've seen this go up and my initial impressions from the outside are: nuclear reactor, washing machine cone, alien space ship. Church? Not a whit. Cost, by
the way, is $190 million for a diocese that encompasses 2.6 million people, 23-28% of which identify as Catholic. And the article in the New York
Times exemplifies what's wrong with the thinking behind designs like this: it's about the ying/yang shaped topiary garden with a stone broken in
three pieces and a bench or two that's intended to provide some sort of healing to the victims of clerical abuse. Note that there's not a smattering
of religious iconography described. The healing provided by Christ seems to be deliberately excluded -- why? Are Catholics now nature worshippers? Are we
called to pray to God hidden in a bush?

Rcesq, isn't God supposed to be present everywhere? But I get your point 
I wasn't put off by the interior of this new church. It reminds me of the ark or something and I take to it more easily than to some other post-modern monstrosities. Have no clue as to the exterior tough. "... nuclear reactor, washing machine cone, alien space ship"... this does sound off-putting. Any pics of the exterior available? |

Oops, yes, I see what you mean rcesq. Thanks for finding these pics.Especially seen in daytime the exterior of this cathedral is not my cup of
tea. But aliens from outer space might be drawn to it.
