Second, even if one accepts that the norms of'Quattuor abhinc annis'are still operative I don't see how the sex of the server can be included under "no interchanging of texts and rites of the two Missals." The old missal prescribes a cleric to assist the celebrant. In practice this has been modified so that laymen/boys can substitute for the cleric, but this is not prescribed in the text of the missal. So can one argue that laymen/boys are prohibited from serving at the altar if we strictly follow the text of the old missal? Also, can the current ruling permitting female servers be restricted to the OF? Does the ruling actually state that? One might argue that at the time of the ruling the EF was not an issue. Yet as there is only one Roman Rite, in two forms, doesn't the ruling then still apply to both? Just wondering.
There is certainly some ambiguity about the status of female altar servers in the EF which needs to be clarified by the Holy See ASAP. I'd hedge my bets, whether one likes it or not, that they will uphold the current ruling about female altar servers, i.e. leave the final decision in the hands of the local ordinary and individual celebrant.
