The tiara is perfectly acceptable as the ancient and continuous symbol of the Papacy, but it distresses me that someone appears to be trying, in certain circumstances, to push for the tiara over the personal choice of the Holy Father.PaxTibi, you are not alone in your distress.
I must say that the timing of this "report" concerning the alleged slip-up by Cardinal Montezemolo and Archbishop Marini is particularly questionable, as it comes at a time when there seem to be more attempts to "by-pass" the official design of Benedict XVI's coat-of-arms. I cannot help but wonder if these reports are meant to imply that the use of the mitre over the tiara was not the choice of Benedict XVI in the first place, and will therefore eventually be "cited" as the justification for the use of the tiara in a number of instances, such as in the design of new vestments.
Without any official declaration from the Holy See that there was indeed an error, and that the design of the coat-of-arms containing the mitre is not the choice that was definitely made by the Pope, there will continue to be misgivings about the reason why, all of a sudden, "reports" have surfaced, and from an unidentified clergyman no less, that two ranking members of the Curia, who are most assuredly well-versed in the protocol of releasing information, have been so indiscreet as to release the details of something so closely linked to the Pope himself, without his express approval, to say nothing of the implication that the Pope has allowed himself to make use of something that he supposedly may not have approved of in the first place.
As to the ornaments surrounding the shield, well, artistic license is permitted and surely will be used. His arms will continue to be depicted ensigned by the Papal tiara whether he likes it or not! (Italics supplied.)With all due respect to Fr. Sylvester, or Mr. Orta -- it is rather unclear as to who exactly made this statement -- I cannot and will not agree, and I think it is enormously disrespectful to the Pope to say that something will be done "whether he likes it or not!" Are the Pope's wishes not to be respected? Are the decisions of the Holy Father in something so personal to him to be given far less importance than the dictates of heraldry? By all means, keep the Papal tiara in the official seal of the Holy See (the tiara and the crossed keys), but I continue to be adamant in my conviction that the Pope's specific wishes as to his coat-of-arms, and all the "ornaments" surrounding it, should be observed.
