Rcesq, I did read the official Vatican biography of
Pius IX and Papa Wojtyla's homily. I have also read many other things. Pius IX was a man who was Pope during a very turbulent period and who reacted to
seismic changes in society by battening down the hatches.
Unicorn has given her own meditation on the Staff
- It is post-modern, and therefore bespeaks the timelessness of the Church, which continues to illuminate human civilization from ancient times to the modern age.
- It is not a "large" cross, and therefore it calls to mind that God, in His infinite love, became "small", and took on humanity, so that He could walk among men with a human face, touch us with human hands, speak to us with a human voice, weep with us human tears.
- It is made of silver, in Latin argentum, which means "white, shining", a metal associated since ancient times with goodness, purity, nobility and protection against evil.
- It is a bent cross, which to me symbolizes the humility of Christ, who bends down from His Throne, to hold out His Hand in love.
- It bears the figure of the suffering Christ, to remind us of the pain our sins have caused - and continue to cause - His Loving Heart, even as it calls to mind the fact that because He Himself suffered, He understands our suffering, and is always at our side even in the darkest nights of our souls.
- It is realistic, and therefore reminds us that Christ is no mythological figure, that He did indeed walk among us, that His sufferings, death and resurrection were real.
- Because it is new, it therefore reminds us that the Church is always new, always young, always relevant to every person, in every time, in every place.
Beuatifully expressed Unicorn. Many thanks.
Now, all things considered, when it comes down to which Papal staff to use, what we appear to have here is a choice between the staff of a Pope whose papacy and beatification harbor unhappy memories, particularly for the Jewish Community, and the staff used by two Popes whose efforts to reach out to our non-Christian brethren are legend - one of them, in fact, being universally acknowledged by people of all faiths as a man of manifest holiness and sanctity.
This is my feeling too.
