The truth is that there have been very few instances of pederasty -the correct term- perperttarted by clergy and it is an insult to the vast majority of good clergy to carry on this matter. There is no evedence that pederasty has been higher in instance among the clergy than any other profession. Certianly it has been higher among policemen and social workers. The real offence in the eyes of the child protection lobby (often feminist)has been the church's opposition to abortion on demand and the exaggeration of the "abuse" issue has been a stick with which to beat the church's pro-life witness. I am disappointed that correspondents on this website have unquestioningly accepted these exaggerations. where pederasty has been perpetrated it is, of couse, most sinful. however, we owe it to the clergy to get the facts right and keep the issue in proportion. Equally eveil has been the false accusuations gainst some clergy. Paying out on civil claims seemes wrong when the money in diocesan coffers is held in trust for the propogation of the gospel and not to pay large sums to individuals and their lawyers. the payments are out of all proportion to what is paid-in England, atleast- to those injured in accidents. I am not down playing the issue but we should not be co-operating with those who want to rain on the Pope's parade and fog the real message of joy His Holiness offers to the American people and the world.
