On January 24 2008 the Pope received a delegation from Tittmoning, the small Bavarian town near the Austrian border where he lived from 1929 to 1932. In his memoirs he called it his childhoods land of dreams.

The Tittmoning delegation, led by the Mayor Dietmar Cremer made the Pope an honorary citizen on the town and presented him with a painting of the pilgrimage church of Maria Ponlach painted in 1768 by Franz Raphael Hrbst. The chapel stands on a hill above the town and the Ratzinger children would often be taken there by their mother.
The mayor thanked the Pope for the message which he delivered from his Rome-bound aircraft at the end of his Bavarian visit in September 2006. He told the Pope that village square had been full of people listening to his words from the sky.
This video of his address was posted on YouTube by Beatrice. It is originally from Bayerische Rundfunk.
In his response, which I hope Rcesq will translate in full, the Pope spoke very fondly of his childhood memories of Tittmoning. Although he can longer wander the streets of his youth, he said, he can still do so in his memories. He recounted some delightful memories of childhood Christmases which I shall leave to Rcesqs eloquent translation skills.
This video is remarkable because it shows Joseph Ratzinger as he really is when he is completely himself. - relaxed, charming, animated and very loveable. I dont recall seeing any other clips which capture him quite so well. Many thanks to Beatrice for posting it.
