This year the Church calendar may have moved the celebration of St. Joseph's Day to March 15, but we all know that it's really March
19! So this year I'm going to celebrate twice. (The Italian parish in the diocese remains undaunted by Holy Week and has its St. Joseph Table with free
spaghetti dinner next Tuesday and Wednesday.) Alas, I do not have the knack of baking with yeast so I won't try making the goodies

The NY Times reports that Lidia Bastianich of Felidia on E 58th St will be cooking for the Pope. Felidia is a wonderful Italian restaurant with great food. The Pope will have a treat.

Conrad/The New York Times NY Times - When Pope Benedict XVI makes his first trip as Pope to New York next month, the cook taking charge of his nightly dinners will be the grande dame of this city's Italian chefs, Lidia Bastianich. Ms. Bastianich told me during a telephone conversation this week that she'd been asked two months ago if she'd be willing to put together two special meals for the Pope. She said yes, and then, at the request of Roman Catholic officials helping to organize his visit, kept her lips sealed until now. She said it wasn't easy. "I'm so elated," she said of the honor she's been given. "I mean - yeah, yeah - it's just tremendous."
"We discussed some of the things, what he likes and dislikes, what he can and cannot eat," she said. "What was stressed really was simplicity, seasonality, a light, balanced meal." The Pope turns 81 next month. She said her son, Joe Bastianich, a partner with Mario Batali in several hugely popular Manhattan restaurants including Babbo, would probably act as the
sommelier for the meals.

Wanted in Rome reports on Petrus story;
A religious website has got the scoop on Pope Benedict XVI's favourite cake shop in Rome. According to Petrus (www.papanews.it), the pope is a patron of the Limentani pasticceria, near the Synagogue in the Jewish Ghetto, which also counts politicians Silvio Belusconi, Massimo D'Alema and Giuliano Ferrara among its customers. Owner Vilma Limentani revealed that the pope is particularly fond of her almond and cinnamon biscuits as well as 'Jewish pizza' (pizza ebraica), a hard cake made with candied fruits, raisins, almonds and pine nuts. Limentani said her baked goods ended up on the pope's table by chance when one of his doctors brought him a bag of almond and cinnamon biscuits from the bakery on a routine visit to the Vatican. Benedict sent a message complimenting Limentani on the biscuits, and since then the doctor always picks up a sweet treat for the pope every time he visits. She added that since the kosher bakery does not use saturated animal fats, Benedict is free to indulge his sweet tooth without fearing for his cholesterol. © Benodette In the interest of research I tried some of the pizza. It is pretty solid slab consisting of a almond paste mixed with nuts, raisins and candied fruit pastry and baked until it is deep brown outside. It is very sweet and very heavy.
© Benodette The biscotti, or cookies, are nicer with lots of nuts and a strong flavour of cinnamon, but they are also extremey sweet. If the Pope eats many of these he needs his walks and his workouts on the bicycle.

Il Papa evidently has quite the sweet tooth. If he does favor these goodies, I think he'll need more than just those walks and workouts! He's not a young man anymore and I would hate to think of him having problems with his blood sugar. Oh well … who am I to talk? I'm not supposed to drink too much Coca-Cola or eat too many chocolates because of
hyperacidity and gallstones, but I can never resist either of those two! Anyone who's ever had to swelter in the heat of a tropical summer
can tell you that a tall, ice-cold glass of Coca-Cola is like manna from heaven when the thermometer hits 34 C! Buon appetito, carissimo Papa!

AKI - Pope Benedict XVI is a big fan of buffalo mozzarella cheese, and eats it often reported Italian daily Il Messaggero on Friday. Pope Benedict XVI reportedly likes simple dishes and often receives buffalo mozzarella cheese as a gift from bishops from the Campania region in southern Italy where the best buffalo mozzarella is produced. The cheese is given to Benedict's policemen, who later 'discreetly' take the cheese to his apartment, Il Messaggero reported. Recently there have been fears the highly popular mozzarella cheese may have been contaminated by dioxins and other chemicals from illegally dumped toxic waste. Japan and South Korea have in recent days halted imports of buffalo mozzarella, and there are fears other countries could suspend imports. Whether or not he ever felt that becoming a priest was the wrong thing to do, directly related to that, whether he contemplated getting married instead.
Whether there was a girl/s he liked during his younger days, then again he entered the seminary at a young age, so maybe not. |

April 12, 2008 - It was noted in the secular press yesterday that Pope Benedict XVI would not be attending the State Dinner given at the White House in his honor. Some in the press have portrayed this as unusual, or as even as a sign of disagreement between the Vatican and the President- - it is not. While the declining of an invitation at the White House is not something, we would normally expect from a visiting head of state, it is keeping within the traditions of protocol for the Pope. Why all the angst about the Pope not attending an evening reception? The day after a nine hour flight, with a six hour time difference, is reason enough for an
81 year old man not to attend a formal evening dinner. He would probably be unable to keep his eyes open and the same would be true of many in his entourage.
This is news about nothing and there is surely no need to roll out excuses of protocol.
Here are two pictures of the Pope having lunch at the Ecumenical Patriarchate in Istanbul on 30th November 2006. I don't believe it is Vatican territory, and I think the host was Patriarch Bartholomew and not the Pope.

Maginas The Pope will have a birthday lunch tomorrow, prepared by the chef at the Georgetown restaurant, Café Milano. A restaurant in Georgtown will be preparing the Pope's birthday lunch. Cooking for pesky Washingtonians represents its own challenges. Cooking for the pope is an entirely different situation. Italian - and Roman Catholic - Franco Nuschese, who owns Cafe Milano in Georgetown, is busy preparing for the pope's 81st birthday lunch on Wednesday at the Holy See's Nunciature to the United States. But like a priest listening to confessions, he isn't spilling any inside dirt. "It's top secret," Nuschese told Yeas & Nays, adding that he can't even talk about the candles. "I have been asked not to talk about the menus that Cafe Milano is putting together for the party." He'll obviously tell you that it's being planned and cooked by Cafe Milano's executive chef Fabio Salvatore [and then prepared at the Nunciature]. Oh, OK, he'll feed you one more bit: Salvatore said he is cooking what he calls a "special pasta" based on a family recipe handed down from his mom and grandmother. Of course, this is an opportunity for Milano to show the German pope just how good Italian food can be. "Indeed, I have been in close touch with the Vatican's representatives in Rome and here in Washington for many weeks. We have been told what the pope likes to eat and doesn't like to eat. Whoever chose Cafe Milano to cater the Pope's birthday lunch couldn't have picked a better Italian restaurant in the entire D.C. area, in my opinion
that is! I read somewhere that Papa B. is fond of buffalo mozzarella and Cafe Milano has a wonderful antipasta dish using it. I don't know if it is
imported from Italy or not. By coincidence, I had dinner there this past Saturday night and had no idea that this restaurant had received such an honour. I
have eaten there several times over the years as my brother lives only about four blocks away and it is his favourite spot in Georgetown. All the food is
superb, particularly the pizzas and the fresh pastas. Unfortunately we were rather late on Saturday and the linguini with Maine lobster was no longer
available. Sigh! A dish of calamari and zucchini and half a bottle of Barolo managed to sustain me though.

The menu at the White House is going to be Bavarian -- a more thoughtful choice for the Pope's birthday. I hope they deliver a sample meal and the dessert
to the nunciature for him to nosh on in his room. President Bush has not hosted many dinners of this kind, so I, for one, thought it was odd that the Pope
couldn't squeeze this party given for him into his schedule. Because of the President's own predilections for early bedtimes and strict punctuality it
wasn't likely that the affair would stretch out into the wee hours. So I was grateful for the protocol explanation. I don't imagine that the lunch with
the Patriarch was in the same protocol league as a meal with a secular head of state in the presence of hundreds of other guests. I wonder, though, if the Holy
See will send a delegate -- Cardinal Bertone perhaps? Or maybe one of the papal secretaries?

What a sweet picture! Thanks rcesq. I'm keeping this one. Yes, it is strange how the television channels keep asking everybody in a cassock for
clarification of the absence at the White House "party" in his honour. The anchors dish up the wildest speculations, some wanting to read the War in
Iraq as the so called "sub text" for the Pope's absence tonight! John Allen's clarification came the nearest to the one given in the post
above.

NY Times - FOR the people charged with cooking for Pope Benedict XVI during his stay in New York last weekend, the list of papal likes and dislikes was surprisingly short. Mostly, the Vatican's instructions reflected the digestive needs of a man who had just turned 81 and was at the end of an intense road trip. He wanted food that was light and seasonal. And the two formal dinners he ate in the wood-lined dining room at the five-story town house
of the papal nuncio to the United Nations on East 72nd Street were to last only 80 minutes.
At the residence where the pope spent the night, all the meals, formal and informal, were prepared in a small square kitchen with a commercial and a home range, and carried up a narrow stairway to an auxiliary serving kitchen just off the dining room. Sister Isabel Reina and Sister Sonia Castro, who handle things culinary at the residence, made the pope's breakfast and lunch. Two formal dinners, one for 52 people and another, smaller one for his closest advisers and friends, were prepared by cooks from the New York restaurants
Del Posto, Becco and Felidia. The chef Lidia Bastianich led

For Lidia Bastianich, cooking for Pope Benedict XVI was more than an honor. In her own words, it was a "closing of the circle."The comment about "a lot of food" for dinner surprises me. The menu strikes me as typical of a leisurely, elegant Italian meal -- my favorite Italian restaurant also serves a little bit of pasta with a little bit of risotto before the main meat or fish course, and then salad afterwards, with dessert. Frequently there's a tiny amuse gueule such as a crostini beforehand. And whoever would dream of piling all that up on one plate at a nice restaurant? Where do the readers of Serious Eats eat? Souplantation?
